Promote Your Programs with Hashtags

One program promotion strategy shared by a CTEIG Grantee is the use of social media. You have the potential to connect your programs with millions instantly by adding hashtags to your tweets and social media posts.

Once you have district approval, it is easy. Register for an account on Twitter. In the "What's happening?" textbox share something great about your program, best practice, photo, or an event, add #CTEinCA and post. Next in the search bar type "#CTEinCA," select the latest tab, your post should be right on top!

Carlsbags Are A Shopping Bag Alternative

Students in the Virtual Enterprise class at Carlsbad High School wanted to start a business that would be eco-friendly and become a shared project with the Fashion class. The innovative collaboration produced a product called CARLSBAGS, a lightweight, durable backpack designed with the skater in mind. The business side of the venture is run by Ms. King’s Virtual Enterprise students, while design and production are done by the students in Ms. Becker’s Fashion class.

Real World Scholars, an e-commerce platform, sponsored the venture by providing $1000.00 per semester to develop and market the product. CARLSBAGS are sold at trade shows and through their website.

Ms. King offers this advice from her seven years’ experience: “Be patient, and understand it won’t be perfect.”

If you are interested in starting a Virtual Enterprise or would like to visit the program, please email Carol King at cking@carlsbadusd.net

Health Science Pathway Middle School through High School Collaboration

“Our area is rural and medically underserved,” said Jackie Valadez from Southwest High School in Central Union High School District. Ms. Valadez and others at the Southwest Academy for Careers in Health Sciences (SACHS) are working to prepare a workforce to close that gap.

For eight years and counting, SACHS has prepared students for careers in Health Science. Foundation courses such as Health (grade 9) and Medical Terminology (grade 10), lead into Sports Medicine, First Responder, and Dental Assistant pathways. In working with industry professionals the academy team was able to develop a new pathway, Community Health Worker, available to students who are interested in Health Science but prefer to avoid working around blood.

The SACHS program articulates with Kennedy Middle School through the HOSA JUMP (Junior Upcoming Medical Professional) program that feeds into SACHS and HOSA at the high school level. Twice a year, high school and middle school students work together on projects with themes like ‘C.S.I.’ (Cardiac Science Inquiry) and ‘CTE’ (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).

If you are interested in more information or in visiting Southwest Academy for Careers in Health Sciences, please email Karen Saikhon, Department Chair at ksaikhon@cuhsd.net.

Project Based Learning Student Showcase

Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) is supporting Project Based Learning (PBL). CTE and academic teachers spent a week together to design integrated PBL activities. The projects are currently being implemented and business and community partners are involved judging the final presentations. The highest scoring projects will be exhibited at a Student Showcase event in May.

An invitation for students to serve as interns to take a leadership role in planning and coordinating the event went out. "We were planning on 10 interns but got 60 applicants!" said Steve Pinning, Linked Learning Director for PSUSD. The Student Showcase interns meet once a week plus one Saturday a month to plan and coordinate the showcase. The interns are reaching out to involve businesses and arrange for the venue, catering, promotions, and competition process.

‘Tis the Season to be Sharing Best Practices

  • “Build your guest speaker list by recruiting parents during Student Registration or Back-To-School Night. We plan to put up a parent table with CTE pathway course information and seek parent volunteers for guest speakers, field trips, advisory members and mentors based on their industry expertise.”
-Jackie Valadez, Southwest High School

  • “Don’t wait until you are having an advisory to reach out to your industry partners. So many of our partners are willing to talk about their industry by just calling or stopping in.”

-Shawneece Coyle, Baldy View ROP

  • "Use Skype or Go to Meeting to meet with your advisory partners. Sometimes it is easier for them to join in the discussion if the partner doesn't have to leave their office."
  • "Send advisory meeting "Save the Date" flyers to parents and industry partners in advance."
  • "Share needs and resources with parents. Parents don't know how to help if we don't tell them."
  • "Invite industry partners to shadow students in their CTE classes. Shadowing provides a great opportunity to start a dialogue between students and industry."

-Imperial Valley CTEIG Workshop Table Talk

Ask Andy

What documentation will we need to keep for verifying the match, post grant?

Your financial activity report will be sufficient for showing your match expenditures. CTE programs should be goal coded 3800 so CDE can review in the county reports.

Would there be an impact to the Round 3 amount if a LEA requested significantly less than they are eligible?

Yes, a Grantee can ask for less money or no money. Ask yourself the following:

  • Are any/all of the CTE teachers doing an externship next summer?
  • Do they have any capital improvements that need to be done?
  • Does time need to be spent on course outlines revisions?
  • Is leadership embedded in all of the pathways?
  • Is the CTSO Advisor being paid a stipend for the additional work?
